The evening brings together artists, growers, organizers, and neighbors to explore food justice, urban agriculture, and ecological interdependence through the lens of contemporary art and community practice. The program features the community-rooted work of Shalom & Tranquility Garden Network, led by Ebonie Randle, and Hood Honey, led by Trey Williams, highlighting their ongoing contributions to land stewardship, pollinator ecosystems, and food sovereignty. Throughout the evening, moCa is activated as a civic and sensory environment where foodways, land-based knowledge, and cultural practice are shared, experienced, and collectively reimagined. During this event moCa will display two film screenings of Bees on the Bus , with a moderated conversation following the second screening. September 6, 2025 moCa Saturday: Dance as Contemporary Art — The 10K Challenge SIGN UP at moCa Cleveland Free to watch $15/individual; $30/duo to battle Join moCa Cleveland and 10K Movement for an afternoon of street dance, creativity, and family fun inspired by moCa’s current exhibitions. Experience live performances, learn about the cultural roots of hip hop styles, and take part in the energy, whether you dance in the circle, cheer from the sidelines, or join in simple movement prompts. Each round’s challenge, inspired by moCa’s current exhibitions, pushes dancers to explore ideas like footwork only , lines and shapes , or level changes . As partners respond and feed off each other’s energy, audiences get a front-row, intimate look at the creativity, improvisation, and community spirit that define battle culture. Alongside the battles, audiences will learn about the history and significance of street dance, cheer for their favorites, and even have a chance to step into the circle themselves. News + Read more at Art News Friday, October 11, 2024 By Alex Greenberger One’s eye typically skates right over the list of materials on the caption for an artwork, since the verbiage used—“oil on canvas,” “ink on paper,” and the like—tends to be more perfunctory than it is engaging. But in the case of Ruben Ulises Rodriguez Montoya ’s sculptures of creatures in transformation, the words used to describe his many materials cannot be ignored because they are so stylized and so bizarre. Take the case of The Lil Rat That Made It on Board the Ship (2021), a sculpture that appeared at Artists Space in New York this past summer. It’s an all-black assemblage that has a long, gnarled tail extending from its body and a pointy claw affixed to its head; it would not be out of place in the Alien universe. Its materials, as described by Montoya, are worth quoting at length: “My very very large black t-shirt that I smeared with pigmented dragon skin silicone. Welding wire, black zip ties, black and green sewing string, rabbit pelt, horn tips, half a horn, nail polish, dirty socks because Timoh was washing his calzones and I couldn’t wait, emerald powdered pigment, car fender, black car part, possed bouncing ball.” Previous Next

Grounded in slowing down and intentional observation, the experience creates space for presence, curiosity, and shared insight. Following the gallery engagement, participants transition into an accessible, hands-on art-making experience focused on process rather than perfection, encouraging creative response, emotional awareness, and self-expression. Offered on the third Thursday of each month until July 2026, the series is designed to be welcoming to both first-time and returning participants, with a consistent structure that fosters ease and belonging.
