In celebration of its 50th Anniversary, the Museum of Contemporary Art (moCa) Cleveland presents Double Takes: Historic and Contemporary Film + Video, an eleven-month film and video exhibition program presented in collaboration with KADIST, a global contemporary art organization located in Paris and San Francisco. Each month from October 19, 2018 until September 2, 2019, we will present one seminal work of early video or film with a contemporary video work from KADIST’s expansive international collection.  These eleven historic and recent films and videos are paired thematically. Some are aligned by formal or conceptual similarities while others serve as provocative counterpoints with relationships that range from the urgent to the absurd and span generations, demographics, and borders. Since our founding in 1968 as The New Gallery, we have presented the work of more than 3,000 artists. Each of the historic films and videos in Double Takes is by an artist that we have presented at moCa. By contrast, the contemporary works present emerging global voices on urgent issues, reflecting our mission to support artists who push culture forward along with our collaborative partner KADIST’s commitment to nurturing experimentation through programs, exhibitions, and collections.

Double Takes celebrates the increasingly important place of film and video in contemporary art, and the various medium-defining contributions by artists and collectives included in this exhibition program: Lynda Benglis, Adelita Husni-Bey, Dara Birnbaum, Jiwon Choi, Tony Cokes, Alex Da Corte, Elena Damiani, Harun Farocki, Simone Forti, Sky Hopinka, Jibade-Khalil Huffman, Nina Könneman, Paul Kos, Cinthia Marcelle, Christian Marclay, Pedro Neves Marques, Rabih Mroué, Bruce Nauman, Martha Rosler, John Smith, The Propeller Group and SUPERFLEX, and Andy Warhol.
