A provocative figure in street art, Mr. Brainwash (a pseudonym for Thierry Guetta) merges street art, pop imagery, and spectacle, recontextualizing original source material into his wry screen prints and sculptures. His colorful texts and iconography reflect the artist’s graffiti-inspired sensibility, bombastic images that explode with color and contemporary cultural symbolism. This work is a uniquely humorous departure for Mr. Brainwash–a black and white screenprint that combines the portraits of an unknown 19th-century couple with those of hip hop legends Run DMC, specifically Joseph Simmons (Run) and Darrel McDaniels (DMC), that suggests an even more historical legacy for the rap group.
