Lori Kella explores the complexity of the 21st century landscape by crafting elaborate fictions meant only for the camera’s lens. Her haunting, highly detailed photographs that seem to portray a surreal nature are, in fact, meticulously constructed in the studio. Using handmade dioramas built from everyday materials, she produces scenes that feel both real and slightly uncanny—drawing viewers in before revealing their artifice. These works, part of her Vanishing Shoreline series, reflect on the fragility of Lake Erie’s ecosystem and the broader impact of climate change, often incorporating subtle references to threatened species. The result is a body of work that is visually captivating yet quietly urgent, balancing beauty with an underlying sense of loss and environmental precarity.
