Donna Huanca is a boundary-pushing multidisciplinary artist who creates immersive environments using sculpture, performance, sound, scent, and painting. Responding to specific architectural spaces, Huanca creates surreal installations that evoke slippages in time, space, and form, providing a means for meditation, transformation, and transcendance. The surfaces of Huanca’s paintings are built upon images of bodies photographed during her performances. This panting, KIMBERLITE FUR, was created for her 2023 installation at Sean Kelly Gallery. Using only her hands, Huanca layers vibrant hues of oil paint, sand, and other natural materials to create tantalizing textures that camouflage the underlying image. Referencing feminine labor and the body, these corpulent paintings transform into visceral topographies of entropy and renewal.
