Abrepaso Flamenco: The Soleá Project
Taste of Flamenco
Registration required
ONsite at moCa
Experience flamenco through an immersive experience of dance, music, writing, and visual arts. Participants will dive into flamenco's soleá style and create their own movements in this moving form.
Alice Blumenfeld is known for a unique and “fierce presence (her movements seem to arise from several feet beneath the ground)” (Thinking Dance) and her “sharp and exhilarating” energy onstage (Philadelphia Inquirer). Blumenfeld is the founder and artistic director of ABREPASO flamenco. The company’s name reflects her vision for flamenco; Abrepaso means to break open space and forge new pathways. As Executive and Artistic Director, she guides the nonprofit organization in deepening community appreciation for flamenco and creating original choreographies, all the while creating new entry points into and new pathways within the art form, building cross-cultural understanding and community through flamenco education.
Soleá is the mother of all flamenco forms–characterized by its long laments and slow, sustained rhythm that ebbs and flows with the pace of the singer's voice. The dance both showcases flamenco's capacity for reclaiming human dignity and its cathartic possibilities.
This project opens pathways into soleá for non-dancers, making space for anyone to experience its power and express the emotions the music inspires.
The workshop is intergenerational and interdisciplinary and opens space for people to regain dignity and build community.
