Eco Printing w/ Deb Berkebile

Registration required

ONsite at moCa

Inspired by Sam Falls's exhibition, We Are Dust and Shadow, and facilitated by Deb Berkebile of Praxis Fiber Workshop, learn how to eco print scarves with leaves and natural dyes.

Deb Berkebile is an artist with an extensive background in textiles and quilt making. Her current body of work explores satellite imagery and creating ‘false-color’ artistic depictions of remote sensed satellite images or Geographical Information Systems. She has eight quilts in her “Earth in Three Bands: R, G, B” series including Eye of Sahara, Galileo Inspiration, The Great Lakes, and Rocky Mountain Trench. The vivid colors and their outstanding variations are what first drew her to these representations.

Berkebile has started a new series of work combining natural dyes and Shibori techniques. She uses rusted hand dyed fabric dipped into indigo; manipulating the fabric with an assortment of Shibori techniques has led to this series with Sashiko hand stitching for finishing numerous pieces.

The artist creates most of the fabrics she uses in her design process. She uses surface design techniques, hand-dyeing and painted fabric, plus digital manipulation of images printed on fabric.

Eco Printing is a form of natural dyeing where plant materials are bundled and use a direct contact printing method, drawing out tannins and pigments from plants to make interesting and surprising marks on protein (silk, wool) fibers which are transferred to fabric via steaming or boiling. Two for one bundling is a favorite technique.

Participants will each receive their own scarf to print.

Attendance is limited and and advanced registration is required.

If you have questions or if there are  access services or accommodations that can make your experience more inclusive, please contact lleving@mocacleveland.org. 1-2 week’s advance notice is recommended but not required.
