Virtual Program

On Wednesday, October 25, join Camil for a virtual artist talk about Bara, Bara, Bara (Divisor Pirata Verde) (2017), her large scale installation currently at moCa Cleveland

Pia Camil (she/her) is a Mexican visual artist based in San Mateo Acatitlán, State of Mexico. Her work ranges widely from painting and sculpture to performance and installation. Highlighting the importance of the collective and communal, her work is often inclusive and directly engages the viewer.

Camil draws inspiration from her context with a critical and political interest around commercial culture or the frenetic pace of mass commodification. In an effort to gear away from industrialized labor her practice is mostly done in collaboration with friends and specially skilled producers. Currently, her rural context is informing new ideas of the collective –the relationship of humans with nature and to other species.

Camil is a graduate of the Rhode Island School of Design, USA, and the Slade School of Fine Art, London.

Known for creating textile sculptures that invite audience engagement, Pia Camil explores how we cultivate relationships with each other and with our natural environments. She will begin this program by speaking about recent projects, which are guided by a framework of collaboration to highlight stories that are often overshadowed by dominant narratives.

During this presentation, catch a sneak peak of images included in Pia’s upcoming monograph, which will be available in early 2024.

Following this, Camil will open up the conversation to audience members, creating a space of active discussion and critical inquiry. This conversational format encourages sharing and parallels her community-engaged practice.

Participants will receive a link to the virtual talk the week of the program.
