Terry Joshua The Pinkest Hue Nov 19, 2021-Jan 2, 2022 Terry Joshua, Symptoms of the Unsaid , 2021. Acrylic on canvas, 48 x 36 in. (121.92 x 91.44 cm). Courtesy the artist. Presented in partnership w/ Museum of Creative Human Art and moCa Cleveland Presented by the Museum of Creative Human Art, Terry Joshua’s first solo exhibition, The Pinkest Hue , brings together new paintings, sound, video, and writing that chronicle his journey from adolescence into adulthood. Beginning with a self-portrait as a young boy, the artist’s paintings act as a visual diary exploring the relationships that have shaped him—with his mother, lovers, God, and himself. Joshua uses his work to forge new connections with his audiences. Each painting is thoughtfully paired with a poem, journal entry, or proverb, and supported by a song to create an intimate environment that underscores the importance of relationship-building. Presented in partnership w/ About the Artist Terry Joshua Terry Joshua Terry Joshua, born to his mother S. Marie Johnson in Cleveland, Ohio, dates his earliest memory of creating art to exploring feelings he couldn’t articulate with words. Throughout his upbringing, he was immersed in poverty, often moving every couple of months to yearly. As a result, his art began to speak to and about his environment. By his teen years, Joshua had experienced various emotional and mental hardships that shaped his outlook on life. While being outspoken in school and involved in art programs, he would not put a brush to canvas until he was 18, during his junior year in high school. Although this first painting was the catalyst to his career as a visual artist, it was not a decision he chose; he recalls being forced by his art teacher to, “paint or fail.” Not only did this painting earn the artist a passing grade, but sent him on a journey into self-discovery, trauma, and confidence in his life and artistic abilities. Joshua characterizes his painting as a “visual love letter” both to those who support him and to the people that have shaped him and his perspective.

  • Erykah-Townsend-Happy-Holidays

Erykah Townsend "Happy" Holidays Jun-Dec 2025 Erykah Townsend, Look Mom, I’m a Woman Now! , 2021. acrylic, oil, modeling paste, and toy witches on panel, 24 x 36 in. (60.96 x 91.44 cm.). Courtesy the artist About the Exhibition Multimedia conceptual artist Erykah Townsend draws from pop culture to unpack connections between innocence and absurdity. During her time as moCa’s Artist-in-Residence (July-December 2022), she began creating a new body of work that explores consumerism’s influence on Western mainstream holidays. This work, to be displayed in her upcoming solo exhibition, "Happy" Holidays, critiques how consumerism has changed the ways we celebrate holidays. Artwork highlighting the chaos of Black Friday and the neighborly sport of holiday decorating satirizes a culture of one-upmanship and demonstrates a shift in values that prioritizes material objects over human relationships. moCa AIR is supported by Margaret Cohen & Kevin Rahilly. “Happy” Holidays is supported by The Satellite Fund, administered by SPACES and funded by The Andy Warhol Foundation for the Visual Arts Regional Regranting Program. About the Artist Erykah Townsend Erykah Townsend , also known as E.T., is a conceptual artist from Cleveland, Ohio. Her art boldly confronts and questions the role of pop culture in our lives. She states, “I use pop culture as a medium itself—exploring the spaces it fills in our lives and the inquiry of how real are the imaginary." Through reflective and humorous narratives, Townsend references art history and critiques consumerism and western culture, using characters, cultural icons, and objects as allegories for her criticism. In addition, her work includes elements from their original sources, providing the audience with a fresh and sentimental encounter. Townsend received her BFA in painting from The Cleveland Institute of Art in 2020.

  • The-National-AIDS-Memorial-Quilt

The National AIDS Memorial Quilt In conjunction with moCa’s presentation of Axis Mundo: Queer Networks in Chicano L.A. and World AIDS Day Oct 8, 2021-Jan 2, 2022 Square from The National AIDS Memorial Quilt (detail). With over 50,000 panels created by thousands of participants worldwide, the AIDS Memorial Quilt is the world’s largest community folk art project. Made up of individually created three by six-foot panels—each the approximate size of a grave—the Quilt memorializes 125,000-plus victims of AIDS and HIV-related illness. Portraits appear alongside names and dates, pictures of pets, flowers, rainbows, musical instruments, and thousands of other symbols that represent friends, lovers, and family members. Currently spanning 1.2 million square feet and weighing 54 tons, the Quilt is a powerful symbol of the AIDS pandemic and a living memorial to a generation lost to AIDS and HIV-related illness. The Quilt was conceived by long-time San Francisco gay rights activist Cleve Jones, who in 1978 created the first panel in memory of his friend Marvin Feldman. That same year the Quilt grew to 1,920 panels and on October 11, 1987, it was exhibited for the first time on the National Mall in Washington, D.C. where half a million people visited on the opening weekend. Jones said of the Quilt, “It could be therapy, I hoped, for a community that was increasingly paralyzed by grief and rage and powerlessness. It could be a tool for the media, to reveal the humanity behind the statistics. And a weapon to deploy against the government; to shame them with stark visual evidence of their utter failure to respond to the suffering and death that spread and increased with every passing day.” This focused installation brings together two blocks of the Quilt in conjunction with moCa’s presentation of Axis Mundo: Queer Networks in Chicano L.A. and World AIDS Day (December 1). Block 0227 and Block 4506 are a poignant and beautiful tribute to the lives of Edmundo “Mundo” Meza—the artist at the center of Axis Mundo —James Brooke Shoulberg, Michael McDowell, David Caroline, Merle Long, Hugo Niehaus, John (surname unknown), John Doe, Terry David Hernandez, E. Gordon Hanna, Jorge Fernandez, Steve Brown, Ted Zak, David Lewis, Paul Mark Patinka, and Michael F. Farrell. With thousands of displays of the Quilt in locations across the globe, over 14 million people have experienced and participated in the project. To learn more about the National AIDS Memorial Quilt please visit www.aidsmemorial.org/quilt . moCa’s presentation of The National AIDS Memorial Quilt is organized by Courtenay Finn, Chief Curator, Ray Juaire, Exhibitions Director, Lauren Leving, Curator of Public Programs & Artist Residencies, Karl Anderson, Exhibition Technician, and supported by the entire moCa Cleveland staff.

Museum of Creative Human Art x moCa Institutional Residency Jul 2021-Jun 2022 Installation of the exhibition Stina Aleah: "Helping" Hands in the Lewis Gallery. In July 2021, the Museum of Contemporary Art Cleveland (moCa) and the Museum of Creative Human Art (MCHA) co-created and launched an institutional residency project. This residency is designed to explore how organizations of different sizes but with similar missions and commitments can work collaboratively in space and programming, learn from one another, and mutually advance goals of equity, education, and creativity. MCHA is a new art world change agent focused on presenting a diversity of artists, creative spaces, perspectives, programs, and activations intended to serve and inspire mission-aligned Black creators. moCa has been both conduit and catalyst for contemporary artists for more than 50 years, supporting and sharing the art and ideas of our time through artist first exhibitions, programs, special projects, and publications. During this residency, MCHA is curating its ambitious exhibition program at moCa’s building with assistance from moCa’s team. moCa and MCHA are creating joint programming for audiences of all ages that springboards from each exhibition and the residency concept-at-large. This institutional residency reinforces MCHA and moCa’s shared missions to advance and improve humanity through art. Ultimately, MCHA and moCa hope that the project could model new approaches to long-form, shared space organizational partnerships that provide both autonomous and collaborative work that prioritizes equity, education, and creativity.
