Williams Apr 29-Jun 5, 2022 Where We Overlap Presented in partnership w/ Museum of Creative Human Art and moCa Cleveland Where We Overlap asks, “Have you experienced an artist’s technical process? Ideation process? The research that goes behind the work or the tools that contribute to it? How many studio visits have you attended lately?” It’s amazing that we attend our peers’ exhibitions and sometimes hear them discuss the meaning behind a piece while at these shows but how engaged are we when it comes to their studio practice? With this exhibition, we have brought a selection of artists together to collaborate amongst each other. Paired off in groups, artists work together creating pieces that unified their skillsets. Though the artists paired may have different approaches to how they execute specific styles, topics, mark, color, etc., they come together and learn from each other to make masterpieces. Here is the result! Davon Brantley, Curator Presented in partnership w/

Puppies Puppies (Jade Kuriki Olivo) Jan 28-Jun 5, 2022 Puppies Puppies (Jade Kuriki Olivo), One year performing outside (Stonewall)(protests) 2020-2021. Courtesy the artist Puppies Puppies (Jade Kuriki Olivo) is the second recipient of moCa’s biannual Toby’s Prize. Named after philanthropist Toby Devan Lewis—one of moCa’s long-standing Board members—the prize supports the artistic practices of five artists over a 10-year period. Puppies Puppies’s early conceptual works were created under a pseudonym that avoided specificity of gender, origin, and individualism. Beginning in 2018, the artist embarked on a new series of work that coincided with the beginning of her transition to Jade Kuriki Olivo. Throughout her multilayered practice is a commitment to the rights of Black, Indigenous, People of Color, transgender, gender non-conforming, two-spirit+ communities. The artist is the first to share the Toby’s Prize experience, inviting artists Jerome AB and J.J. Adams to create new works for two simultaneous solo exhibitions opening in January 2022. Her project at moCa also includes the development of a new film and the creation of her first publication, published in collaboration with Remai Modern in Saskatoon, Canada, and Kunsthaus Glarus in Switzerland. Toby's Prize is generously supported by Toby Devan Lewis.

Erykah Townsend "Happy" Holidays Jun-Dec 2025 Erykah Townsend, Look Mom, I’m a Woman Now! , 2021. acrylic, oil, modeling paste, and toy witches on panel, 24 x 36 in. (60.96 x 91.44 cm.). Courtesy the artist About the Exhibition Multimedia conceptual artist Erykah Townsend draws from pop culture to unpack connections between innocence and absurdity. During her time as moCa’s Artist-in-Residence (July-December 2022), she began creating a new body of work that explores consumerism’s influence on Western mainstream holidays. This work, to be displayed in her upcoming solo exhibition, "Happy" Holidays, critiques how consumerism has changed the ways we celebrate holidays. Artwork highlighting the chaos of Black Friday and the neighborly sport of holiday decorating satirizes a culture of one-upmanship and demonstrates a shift in values that prioritizes material objects over human relationships. moCa AIR is supported by Margaret Cohen & Kevin Rahilly. “Happy” Holidays is supported by The Satellite Fund, administered by SPACES and funded by The Andy Warhol Foundation for the Visual Arts Regional Regranting Program. About the Artist Erykah Townsend Erykah Townsend , also known as E.T., is a conceptual artist from Cleveland, Ohio. Her art boldly confronts and questions the role of pop culture in our lives. She states, “I use pop culture as a medium itself—exploring the spaces it fills in our lives and the inquiry of how real are the imaginary." Through reflective and humorous narratives, Townsend references art history and critiques consumerism and western culture, using characters, cultural icons, and objects as allegories for her criticism. In addition, her work includes elements from their original sources, providing the audience with a fresh and sentimental encounter. Townsend received her BFA in painting from The Cleveland Institute of Art in 2020.

  • moCa Cleveland Building

The Building The Building About moCa's Mission DEIA The Building Support Membership Staff & Jobs Board Shop News Contact Us Farshid Moussavi moCa's building garners various reactions from those in our city. 11400 Euclid Avenue, often used as a personal mirror by passers-by, was designed to inspire dialog centered on creativity. It does so while reflecting a cosmopolitan area of Cleveland and those who bring it to life. moCa's physical structure is nearly 34,000-square-foot, 44 percent larger than moCa's former rented space. A museum expansion need not be large in scale to be ambitious. Both environmental and fiscal sustainability were key considerations within the design. Resulting in a landmark that is at once technically inventive and highly practical. Iranian-born, London-based Farshid Moussavi designed the dynamic structure, formerly with Foreign Office Architects (FOA) and now principal of Farshid Moussavi Architecture (FMA). moCa remains her first U.S. commission and her first museum. In addition to FMA, the design team included executive architects Westlake Reed Leskosky , headquartered in Cleveland, and designers of more than 50 cultural buildings throughout the United States. According to Moussavi, "museums today are not just homes for art, but serve multiple functions and host a variety of activities. Our design for moCa Cleveland aimed to provide an ideal environment for artists and visitors to foster creativity in a variety of exhibitions and programs." The four-story building, which anchors the Uptown district, rises 60 feet from a hexagonal base to a square top, where the primary exhibition space is situated. All four floors contain areas for either exhibitions or public programs. The exterior is primarily a mirror-finish of black Rimex stainless steel. Three of the building's six facets, one of them clad in transparent glass, flank a public plaza designed by James Corner Field Operations , a New York-based landscape architecture and urban design firm. The plaza serves as a public gathering place and links moCa to Uptown attractions and amenities. Upon entering the building, visitors find themselves in an atrium where they can experience the dynamic shape and structure of the building as it rises. This space leads to moCa's lobby and a double-height multi-purpose room for public programs and events. From there, visitors may take moCa's monumental staircase, a dominant architectural feature of the building, to the upper floors. On the top floor, the 6,000-square-foot gallery space has no fixed dividing walls, allowing for various configurations. This floor also contains a gallery designed for new media work and the Dick and Doreen Cahoon Lounge, which overlooks Toby's Plaza and Uptown.

  • Nina-Katchadourian-Monument-to-the-Unelected

Nina Katchadourian Monument to the Unelected Oct 22-Nov 29, 2020 Installation at moCa: Nina Katchadourian, Monument to the Unelected 2008–ongoing, 58 screen-prints on coroplast, rebar, cable. Dimensions variable. Courtesy the artist, Catherine Clark Gallery, and Pace Gallery Concurrently at moCa Cleveland: 11400 Euclid Avenue and Transformer Station : 1460 W 29th Street Artist Nina Katchadourian (b. 1968) works across various media—including photography, sculpture, video, and sound—using humor and ingenuity in service of what she calls “productive confusion.” Often working outside the studio or museum, Katchadourian has created pieces in libraries, in trees, on airplanes, and in parking lots. She has collaborated with zookeepers, musicians, United Nations translators, Morse code operators, animals, as well as her own parents. The result is a playful and poignant practice, one that pushes us to see our everyday surroundings as a site of discovery and possibility. Katchadourian’s Monument to the Unelected (2008–ongoing), is a set of lawn signs created by the artist featuring the names of every candidate who ran for President of the United States and lost. Installed outside moCa Cleveland on the corner of Mayfield Road and Euclid Avenue, and outside Transformer Station in their front lawn, Monument to the Unelected runs from October 22 to November 22, spanning the time before and after the 2020 U.S. presidential election. Once the election results are official, a 59th sign with the name of the losing candidate will be added to the installation. Monument to the Unelected was originally commissioned by the Scottsdale Museum of Contemporary Art during the run-up to the 2008 presidential race between Barack Obama and John McCain. During her time in Arizona, Katchadourian was struck by the proliferation of campaign signs on lawns, in vacant lots, and at busy intersections in what has historically been a swing state. “The signs struck me as a particularly American phenomenon, and one that was worthy of closer investigation,” she said. “These markers tend to crop up in the weeks leading up to an election, after which they disappear, with some of the names going on to take office and others being largely forgotten.” Shown during every presidential election since the work’s inception in 2008, Monument to the Unelected serves as a reminder of our country’s collective political road not taken. It does not reflect any particular political viewpoint or endorse any specific party, but rather articulates the transition of power within U.S. history. As a monument to those who have lost, Katchadourian’s work is an invitation to consider missed opportunities and alternative histories, all of which can inform the decisions we make today.

  • Honey-Pierre-Bloodline

Honey Pierre Bloodline Mar 18-Apr 17, 2022 Honey Pierre, Morning Juice , 2022. Acrylic, oil, pastel, and yarn. 48 x 62 in. Presented in partnership w/ Museum of Creative Human Art and moCa Cleveland Cassandra Hickey (b. 1993, Cleveland, OH), also known as Honey Pierre, is one of four children from Rhonda Harris. Cassandra has always been interactive in art activities but her real introduction to art was through fashion magazines, which gave her the urge to draw illustrations everyday. From there, Cassandra learned to express herself through art by learning to work with new mediums and techniques. She was encouraged by a local high school teacher, which grew her confidence. Instead of attending college or an institute for the arts, she chose to join the United States Army. For the next three years, Cassandra’s life was dedicated to serving her country. Once the contract was up, she fed her urge to become an artist full time. Moving from Cleveland to Atlanta was a transition but it supported her journey towards more creative outlets. In two years, Cassandra has participated in over 40 art exhibitions and events and is a part of two community based non-profits. She is a mixed media artist whose practice includes murals, textiles, collage, and painting. Presented in partnership w/ Artist Statement Honey Pierre Honey Pierre The women in our lives are given the often-thankless duty of caring for many people, both physically and emotionally, while maintaining a loving, nurturing spirit. It’s obvious to most that a woman will sacrifice her own aspirations in favor of supporting their loved ones. The women in my family– my aunts, grandmother, and mother–have all had an unmatched influence on my life path. They put me in a position to be myself and develop my natural inclination and passion for the arts. They believed I could do anything I aspired to, and this exhibition has been inspired by these very sacrifices. I have created a series of carefully woven Fiber Portraits of each of these highly influential women in my life. Each piece is unique, with a wide spectrum of bright colors while sustaining a motherly warmth. The most important aspect of this exhibit is that it exudes the love and care that has gone into the work. I’d like you to feel at home when experiencing these pieces as I have, the many times I have explored this museum. I am very excited for my art to reach more souls and hope each individual can find solace here in the same way I have.
