From the opening scene of the Hype Williams-directed cult classic Belly, to Missy Elliott’s poofy, silver suit in her The Rain (Supa Dupa Fly) visuals, to Childish Gambino’s monumental meme-worthy This Is America, and Tyler the Creator’s ever-present goofy outfits and characters, hip-hop visuals tattoo our brains with memories of the effortless energy and talent of their stars. This final installment of eCLEctic, Made You Look, invites you to celebrate the directors creating such memories for our city’s hip-hop greats. The artists directing music videos and films all capture the essence, vibrancy, and talent of the artists electrifying Cleveland’s local scene. We will also draw inspiration hearing first-hand how one of Hollywood’s most talented filmmakers got his start right here in Cleveland. Experience eCLEctic: Made You Look on August 30th with live performances, conversations, and wisdom dropped by local artists and a very special conversation with filmmaker, Steven Caple Jr.

Panel 1

The Art of Music Video Production/Short-Film Storytelling

Moderated by ImFromCleveland’s JD Caminero, eCLEctic is excited to prompt a dynamic discussion among some of Cleveland’s finest hip-hop music video directors, including Santino Cash, Josh Teplitz, and Scenematix. These directors have conducted stellar videos for Cleveland-based performers such as Case Bargé, Young Cap, Majik, Pooh Gutta, and Doe Boy. The directors will show and discuss their work, as well as reflect on the evolution of their style, how they developed their careers and what excites and inspires them about the Cleveland hip-hop scene.

Performance: Case Bargé

Cleveland-based performer and moCa Cleveland New Agent, Case Bargé will fill moCa with his energy and music during a special performance. Bargé’s 2019 album Transcend, released on his independent music label, ALOOF Recordings, is a beautiful, experimental hip-hop album that captures his strong and unique voice. A sincere and raw artist, Bargé fills his poetic music with wisdom on self-love, mental health, and the importance of positivity. Watch him light-up the moCa stage during his electrifying multi-media performance.

Panel 2

In Conversation with Steven Caple Jr.

Steven Caple Jr. is a Cleveland-made artist: growing up in the city, studying marketing and film studies at Baldwin Wallace before heading west for Los Angeles. After earning his master’s degree from the University of Southern California’s School of Cinematic Arts, Caple Jr. has gone on to direct award-winning films, including A Different Tree and The Land, which was filmed in Cleveland and premiered at the 2016 Sundance Film Festival. Steven will be in conversation with Blame Swoope, a fellow filmmaker in the Cleveland hip-hop scene and host of The SuperFriends podcast featuring insightful conversations with guests such as ILTHY’s Glen Infante. The two figures will engage in conversation about Caple Jr.’s start in Cleveland, his evolving style, and the influence of hip-hop on his work.
