Begun in 1998, PULSE has featured new bodies of work by Northeast
Ohio artists, both emerging and established. So named to reflect MOCA’s
interest in “keeping its finger on the pulse” of current
trends in the regional art scene, the PULSE Exhibition Series has
featured artists who embody the breadth and depth of artists talent
in Northeast Ohio including, Dexter Davis (1998),
Eric Rippert (1998-99), Douglas Lucak/Laurence Channing
(1999), John Pearson (2000), Bellamy Printz
(2000), Heather White (2001), Eve Thomson
(2001), Royden Watson (2002), Julie Langsam
(2002) Martin Ball (2003), Hildur Ásgeirsdóttir
Jónsson (2005), Peggy Kwong-Gordon (2006)
Craig Lucas (2008), and Christian Wulffen (2009).
Artists living and working in the region have also been featured in
one-person exhibitions, such as Don Harvey, whose exhibition, Invented
Landscapes, was on view in MOCA’s main galleries in Summer
2001 or Jason Lee, whose site-specific installation as part of the
Curve Exhibition Series, appeared in the Dr. Gerard and Phyllis Seltzer
Rotunda Gallery . Northeast Ohio artists have also been exhibited
alongside international artists in thematic group exhibitions, such
as Oberlin-based artist Johnny Coleman, whose installation Station
to Station (2004), based on the concept of flight and refuge,
made with a variety of found and fabricated materials, was included
in the Winter 2004 exhibition, Material Witness.
