Internships at the Museum of Contemporary Art Cleveland provide hard-working
and dedicated individuals with rare, behind-the-scenes experience
and invaluable knowledge. Established in 1968, MOCA is a mid-sized,
non-collecting museum with a staff of under 25 full and part-time
employees. Our fast-paced, hands-on environment allows interns to
experience the interconnectedness of our different departments as
they collaboratively work to fulfill our mission of fostering an appreciation
for and understanding of the art and ideas of our time.
Interns should expect to work on a variety of daily assignments that
can include administrative tasks such as online research projects,
data entry, coordination of mailings, and word processing as well
as concentrated long-term projects.
PLEASE NOTE:
A commitment of 8-16 hours per week is required
Each intern is expected to participate in at least
two special events per season, most of which occur during evenings and weekends.
MOCA internships are UNPAID
ACADEMIC CREDIT: MOCA participates in some cooperative education and/or
work-study programs. Specific terms of participation varies by school;
interested students should contact their college placement office
or academic advisor for more information. |

Internship Areas
Curatorial
Curatorial Interns at MOCA are passionate about contemporary art and willing to
take on diverse tasks. They actively contribute to all stages of the curatorial process
by assisting the Senior Curator in the research and production of exhibitions. Tasks will
include interacting with international artists and their representatives, preparing
correspondence to exhibition lenders and creating wall labels. Interns can expect to
become active contributors to the MOCA community and must be self-motivated, meticulous
and creative while possessing superior communication skills. The ideal candidate will
have an art history or fine art background, a proven talent for writing and a desire to
be involved at the cutting edge of contemporary art.
Preferred Majors: Art History, particularly in the areas of contemporary or twentieth century
A commitment of 8-16 hours per week is required.
External Affairs: Development and Special Events
Development Interns participate in all aspects of MOCA's membership program including
drafting grant proposals to corporations and foundations; conducting research assignments
on prospective funding sources; facilitating mailings for a number of different campaigns;
and updating donor and prospect files. Interns will also be closely involved in the planning
and implementation of a variety of exciting social functions and special events.
Candidates should be detail oriented, self-motivated, flexible and enthusiastic.
Strong communication, computer and administrative skills are imperative.
Preferred Majors: Marketing, Communication, Management
A commitment of 15-20 hours (2-3 days) per week is required. Due to the nature of this
internship candidates must be available to work special events, most of which occur during
evenings and weekends.
Exhibition Interpretation and Tech-Based Initiatives
Interpretation Interns are integral members of the Curatorial and Education Department,
working with the Director of Education/Associate Curator and New Media Education Manager
to help develop and execute exhibition-related interpretive materials, talks and lectures,
artist programs, special events, and technology-based initiatives like cell-phone delivered
podcasts and web-based outreach. The Interpretation Interns’ projects have included
researching upcoming exhibitions, corresponding with artists and curators for upcoming
events, creating web-based evaluations for artist programs, assisting with web-based
outreach, and leading interactive tours.
Interpretation Interns must possess superior writing, interpersonal, organizational, and
computer skills. Ideal candidates are self-starters who are comfortable working independently
and speaking in public. Proficiency with social networking sites and experience with
podcasts is preferred.
Preferred Majors: Art History, Museum Studies, Art Education with a Museum focus, New Media/Technology
A commitment of 8-16 hours per week is required.
Guest Services
Guest Services interns help to ensure a fabulous visitor experience. There is no such thing
as a typical day for this versatile intern, whose duties will include assisting with the
management and implementation of programs, special events and tours; greeting and interacting
with multicultural museum visitors; analyzing attendance trends; and assisting in the museum
gift shop as needed. Candidates must be outgoing with exceptional interpersonal communication
skills and a strong interest in Contemporary Art. This internship is an excellent introduction
for enthusiastic individuals interested in a career in event management, guest services or hospitality.
Preferred Majors: Communication, Hospitality, Event Management
Must be able to work 8 hours per week during normal business hours and two events per season.
Due to the nature of this internship candidates must be available to work special events, most
of which occur during evenings and weekends.
Marketing and Communications
Marketing and Communication Interns assist in creating visibility for the museum's exhibitions
and programs as well as in attracting new audiences. Interns conduct market research and
demographic analysis, facilitate mailings, update various databases, assist at special events,
maintain media files, scan articles and maintain archives of printed materials.
The ideal candidate should be flexible, energetic, creative, and enthusiastic. Interns are
involved in a wide variety of tasks so they must have superior organizational and interpersonal
skills, exceptional attention to detail, excellent computer skills, and the ability to work
both independently and as a member of a team in a fast-paced, deadline-oriented environment.
Preferred Majors: Journalism, Marketing and Communication
A commitment of 8-16 hours per week is required.
Youth and Family Education
Youth and Family Interns are integral members of the Education Department, working with the
Curator of Education to plan and execute K-12, family and docent programs at MOCA Cleveland.
The Youth and Family Interns’ projects have included creating teacher resource packets,
developing educational materials such as lesson plans, leading interactive tours, and
performing research assignments.
Youth and Family Interns must possess excellent interpersonal, organizational and computer
skills. Ideal candidates are creative and equally comfortable working with children and
engaging their caregivers in conversation. An outgoing personality is essential and experience
working with children is preferred.
Preferred Majors: Art Education, K-12 Education, Communication
