Aïda Ruilova : The Singles 1999 - Now On view June 4th, 2010 through August 15th, 2010
ON VIEW in the Marjorie Talalay Gallery
Co-organized by the Aspen Art Museum and the Contemporary Art Museum St. Louis
Coordinated at MOCA Cleveland by Megan Lykins Reich, Director of Education and Associate Curator
Mixing elements of classical cinema, popular culture, avant-garde music, and a do-it-yourself aesthetic, New York-based artist Aida Ruilova's choreographed installation of single channel videos creates an evocative, haunting, and dissonant environment. Characterized by scenes of dark, confined interiors and psychologically distressed protagonists, Ruilova's video works are cut into percussive pulses - quickly flashing scenes - in which moving images are accompanied by hysterical screams or emphatic whimpers. A curious mix of classic horror movie techniques and a highly refined approach to the macabre, Ruilova's work transforms stone basements and derelict stairwells into backdrops for contemporary Gothic fantasy.
