FREE for teens ages 13-18 / Limited Availability / Registration Required

Contemporary art and culture come together in this one day workshop where teens explore music, visual art, dance, and poetry with hip hop artist-educators. MOCA will be transformed into a learning and performing space, drawing inspiration from the visual art work of iona rozeal brown. Teens start the day sampling, DJing, MCing, breaking, beat boxing, and creating graffiti art, and finishing with a performance for parents and friends. This dynamic afternoon will reveal how hip hop arts education fosters creativity, builds self-esteem and teamwork skills, and can be a productive form of self-expression for youth.

Register early by calling Nicole Ledinek at 216.421.8671 ext 41.

   Distinguished Artist Lecture: Willie Cole
FREE and open to the public

In a series of extraordinary “scorch paintings,” canvases “branded” with the imprints of steam irons, Willie Cole has established himself a major contemporary artist. The scorch paintings reference African tribal markings, domestic labor, and personal family history and have resembled masks, slave ships, and flowers. Cole’s sculptures built from recycled objects ranging from high-heel shoes, hair dryers, and bicycle parts similarly reference a broad range of cultural practices, particularly African art traditions. Cole will speak informally in the galleries about his life, his work, and his works of art on view in the exhibition. Produced in collaboration with the Myers School of Art, University of Akron with additional funding by the Akron Art Museum.

Sosa’s compositions are known for their exploration of African and Latin music as they combine modern jazz harmonies with the latest in electronic music. Downbeat magazine writes, "Sosa stokes the African and Cuban fires: Each burns distinctly from the other while illuminating the place between them. This is where Sosa pitches his musical camp and works his magic."
